Portraits

Introduction

Portraits are what I enjoy doing the most. The challenge of getting the resemblance while allowing for something special, different that can only be done in a painting and not in photography is always exciting.

Tessa is the hairdresser in my village of Doddington. This picture is now hanging in her salon.

Clive Myrie is a British journalist and television presenter.

This portrait is oil on canvas-board 8/10 inches

Charles Dance is an English actor, usually cast in villain or at least intimidating roles.

Ncuti is an oil on canvas portrait based on the actor Ncuti Gatwa in the role of Dr Who

Brad is an oil on canvas painting based on British television presenter.

Stuart Campbell is a young Scottish actor (born 1998) who has appeared on television in programmes such as SAS-Rogue Heroes, Baptiste, Shetland; on stage, he has been seen alongside Martin Freeman, James McAvoy and was nominated for “Best Actor in a Play” in 2019.

Judi, Oil on Canvas

Deconstructed Self-Portrait is composed of nine 6.5/6.5cm oil on canvas paintings. Each one (with two exceptions) is based on a self-view in a mirror. They were done at different times of the day and facing a window, so the lighting may change even if the eyes remain focused.

Self-Portrait (minimalist)

Incognito is a self-portrait I did a few years back, in which I wanted to try to make the face recognisable without showing too many details.

The painting is done in acrylic paint on canvas and is 45.5/55.5 cm.

The Night Manager is based on a portrait of the actor Hugh Laurie – you can guess some of his features if you know.

It is acrylic on canvas, measures cm (framed)

A pencil portrait of Pablo Picasso, done with white and black pencil on grey paper.

The drawing measures 34.5/25.5 cm (framed)

This is for sale for £50.00* + Shipping.

Pablo

Matthew Shepard

Matthew Shepard was a young gay man who was beaten, tortured and left to die near Laramie (Wyoming) in 1968.

This oil on canvas portrait is 82.5/62.5 cm and is for sale for £350.00 + shipping. Proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Terrence Higgins Trust. For more information, see the Charities page.

This is an oil on paper portrait of my brother Patrick. Similar portraits can be done based on a good photograph. The “unfinished” style is deliberate, mixing drawing and painting.

Peek-a-Boo is an oil on canvas painting. The brown colour is painted and the white is the white of the bare canvas creating this negative picture.

A more traditional drawing (self-portrait) can be done in less time and, obviously, at a lesser cost than an oil painting.
